Scheffler
Meg Scheffler, M.D., BCM pediatric resident working in Africa.

10.2.2008: All PIDS/BIPAI scholarships for 2008 and 2009 have been granted. Twelve scholarships were granted for 2008, and 29 scholarships were granted for 2009. Applications for calendar year 2010 will be accepted beginning in March, 2009.

The PIDS/BIPAI scholars program is designed to provide an international infectious disease learning opportunity for young health professionals (med students, residents, or ID fellows). The PIDS/BIPAI scholars program is generously supported by a grant from the Abbott Fund. Scholars receive fully-paid travel and housing to support a one-month elective experience at one of BIPAI's HIV/AIDS Children's Clinical Centers of Excellence. These Centers of Excellence are located in Botswana, Burkina Faso, Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland, and Uganda. Scholars participate in mentored training on-site by BIPAI faculty. Applicants are encouraged to submit their CV, dates of availability, country preference (if applicable), and a brief personal statement to Meg Ferris at mferris@bcm.edu. The personal statement should describe the applicant's interest in international health and why the applicant would like to pursue the international rotation.

Applicants should apply 8-10 months in advance of their proposed trip, and should include the phrase "PIDS/BIPAI scholar application" in the subject line of their e-mail. All applications will undergo review by a PIDS/BIPAI committee.
